How we grade this

Rolls are checked for how tightly they are rolled and how straight they are, because loose or crushed rolls break in transit. Kun and Chuangui measure diameter and bark thickness at both ends, look over the natural outer surface for mould spots and insect holes, and snap a roll to check the cut face and the smell. Sweet and warming is right; a sour smell points to sulphur, and the lot is set aside.

Frequently asked questions about Natural Long Rolls

Natural or scraped rolls: which should I choose?

Natural rolls keep the grey-brown outer cork and cost less. Scraped rolls lose 15–20% of their weight to scraping and are quoted 20–30% higher for a cleaner look. Taste and oil depend on the bark, not on the scraping.

Why do some rolls look grey?

The outer cork of cassia bark is naturally grey-brown. That is normal for natural-surface bark.

How are the rolls made?

Fresh bark is shaped into rolls and dried in the sun for 5–7 days, or at 40–50 °C for 2–3 days. Too much heat drives off oil or scorches the bark.
